SELAH

Selah was throwing up again. She honestly couldn’t tell if it was from anxiety or if it was her pregnancy. She wasn’t sleeping much because the ground was cold and hard. There were no blankets or pillows so most nights, Selah wrapped her arms deeper into her sweater, hoping to stay warm. When she did finally fall asleep, she jerked awake with the realization that what she was living was the actual nightmare. Her whole body hurt. Not to mention, the food they had been eating was not enough to sustain them. A bowl of oatmeal and a cup of soup for two meals a day was not enough. It certainly wasn’t enough for the baby growing inside her. Selah felt so weak.

“Sey?” Maddox waited until she finished throwing up and walked up to her. “You okay?”

“Does it look like I’m okay?” Selah asked. She closed her eyes to try to stop the spinning and dizziness that usually accompanied her throwing up.

Maddox handed her a bottled water he hadn’t finished so she could rinse out her mouth. “It’s just that you’ve been sick a lot. I’m really worried about you.”

Selah took a big drink and wiped water droplets from her mouth. She stared at him. “You are?”

“Yeah, I am.” He reached out and pulled her into his arms. He put a hand up to her forehead. “Do you have any other symptoms?”

Selah sighed and stepped back just out of reach, feeling instantly cold. Maddox dropped his arms by his side.

“Do you remember when we met?” Selah asked abruptly. She rubbed her arms, thinking again about how cold it was down here in this basement. She tried not to think about the fact that each time she rubbed her arms, she was likely removing a layer of dirt. There was no way to tell how long they’d been down there—Selah thought a couple days—but Selah was starting to feel as disgusting as she knew she smelled. To be honest, she wasn’t sure if the body odor was coming from her or Maddox or both of them. If whoever had taken them had wanted to torture them, they had already succeeded. Selah had never felt so uncomfortable in her life.

“Yeah, of course.” Maddox looked confused. “We were at that party. You were wearing that smoking hot cocktail dress that showed off your legs and the top came down low—"

“Yeah,” Selah interrupted. “See, I remember thinking you were the hottest guy in the room, too. But I misjudged you. I wasn’t interested in you until you approached me, and you said—”

“What’s a musical genius like you doing over here by yourself in the corner,” Maddox smiled at the memory.

“Right, you complimented my talent. You didn’t mention my legs or body. I was so tired of shallow guys who only cared about how good we’d look together. But that’s what we eventually became.”

“What? No, we were great together. Everything was going great until the incident.” Maddox looked angry again for a fleeting second.

“See, that’s what I need to talk to you about.
